How do u spell respect?
I’m stuck minding the store for the rest of the week without a break.
I’m worried.
It’s only Monday & I’m already punchy. I had bags under my eyes & my cheeks ache from maintaining the customer friendly smile. My feet hurt. Every customer is an obstacle for me.
& In the midst of trying to maintain a professional attitude as a sales person everyday, u’ve gotta believe that I still had my share of the nastiest customers.
I once served this shrewish Hongkie woman (who speaks a mixture of Cantonese, Mandarin & strongly HK accented English) telling me directly in my face that sales persons are just a bunch of lowly beings who’s uneducated (which prolly means stupid & useless to her).
Like Helloooo??
Isn’t she stupid as well to assume that all of us are uneducated? Like it’s not bad enough to assume, she still got the cheek to have her assumptions wrong. Some of my colleagues graduated with a diploma can? & This is what they’re rewarded with for forgoing a possibly better pay to serve u ungrateful, uncivilized fellas?
”Young gurl, remember the golden rule: Customer is the king!”
She added with her HK accented English.
This customer obviously tried too hard in earning people's respect.
I was stunned for a millisecond & I thought I could really picture a crown on her cabbage head but I quickly recovered & argued back defensively, still yet to lose my courtesy. I think my malay manager Sry was quite stunned when she eventually realized that the customer & I were infact arguing all along when I finally got fed-up & started spewing everything in English instead.
I believe there is a common misconception that retail is the most unintelligent jobs around. Prolly cuz it can be considered as one of the easiest job to clinch in our present economy if u don’t wanna starve/ wants extra pocket money. However the brutal fact is, not many can live to tell the tale of being in this line. No, I’m not exaggerating.
Retail is the most direct way to be exposed to the true colors of our society. U are buffed up to face the toughest of the tough, the meanest of the mean. Crying doesn’t straighten things like how it prolly would back at home where u’re a pampered little princess. Ur customers who are paying for ur merchandise won’t hear of ur nonsense though u have to very much tolerate theirs. & Good grief, u should hear how some comments can get really humiliating. & So I concluded:
Anyone who survived the retail line can survive anywhere else.
If u happen to be one of the few lucky survivors, u’ll gradually realize u have the spectacular ability to read people’s mind, thus knowing what everyone wants without having to prompt further at the end of it all. By knowing what exactly do each individual want, u get satisfied customers. & With the capability of satisfying just about any customers, I’m sure one will have no problem managing any business at all.
Look at all the directors & CEOs of any company. Which of them is not after all a sales person?
From today on, customers who belittle my occupation as a sales person shall not bother me one bit. If they could spout uncivilized stuffs to a sales person just to emphasize that they’re one higher, they are simply not even on par with that sales person’s sophistication to be fit to speak to her.
& The bottom line is of course,
respect all occupations :)
